I think it's needed so that we learn to be prepared in the future/out of high school. That we know what we want to do, what we need to do, and learn what we need to learn to achieve those goals. Teachers should put more effort into their student's and their grades, but not too extreme. Students should also start caring more about there grades instead of just being content with barely passing. *Ish just speaking from experience from my school.
